  2. Problem Printing to Hewlett-Packard DeskJet Printers

  6. The Microsoft Windows NT product group has recently identified a printing 
  7. problem on some systems when printing to Hewlett-Packard DeskJet, 
  8. DeskJet Plus and DeskJet 500 printers from Windows NT.  Error 21 is known 
  9. to occur when attempting to print unless the printer was powered off when 
  10. the system was booted.  The problem occurs due to a failure on the part of 
  11. the parallel port driver to reset if the printer is turned on at 
  12. initialization of Windows NT.  If you print to one of the aforementioned 
  13. printers, you may encounter this problem.

  15. If you encounter this problem, please take the following steps to replace 
  16. the driver as instructed below.  We appreciate our customers efforts in 
  17. reporting problem areas and encourage you to continue working with us to 
  18. improve the product.  If you continue to encounter similar problems, please 
  19. let us know.

  24. 1.      First, close all applications running on the desktop.  
  25.  
  26. 2.      Using the File Manager, locate PARALLEL.SYS in the Windows 
  27. NT installation path.  For example, C:\WINNT\SYSTEM\DRIVERS.  From the 
  28. menu, select File, Rename and rename this file to PARALLEL.OLD.

  30. 3.      Insert the floppy disk into a disk drive containing the updated 
  31. version of PARALLEL.SYS. 
  32.  
  33. 4.      Using the File Manager, click on the corresponding drive icon.  
  34. Select PARALLEL.SYS and from the menu, select File, Copy, To: and type in 
  35. the appropriate path destination.  For example, C:\WINNT\SYSTEM\DRIVERS.

  37. 5.      Exit File Manager.

  39. 6.      Properly shutdown the system by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, Shutdown, OK.

  41. 7.      Restart Windows NT.
